Shirley Bassey

Shirley Bassey ist eine walisische Sängerin, die sowohl für ihre kraftvolle Opernstimme als auch für die Aufnahme der Titelsongs zu den James-Bond-Filmen „Goldfinger“ (1964) bekannt ist; „Diamonds Are Forever“ (1971) und „Moonraker“ (1979). Sie wurde in der Bute Street in Butetown (auch bekannt als „Tiger Bay“) im Hafenviertel von Cardiff geboren und war das sechste und jüngste Kind von Henry Bassey aus Nigeria und Eliza Jane Start aus dem Nordosten Englands. wuchs aber in der angrenzenden Gemeinde Splott auf. Nachdem Bassey die Splott Secondary Modern School im Alter von 14 Jahren verlassen hatte, fand er Arbeit in der örtlichen Curran Steels-Fabrik und sang abends und am Wochenende in Gasthäusern und Clubs. 1953 unterzeichnete sie ihren ersten Profivertrag und arbeitete anschließend für den Impresario Jack Hylton. Ihre erste Single nahm sie 1956 auf.
